boutique experience

Hanamura — meaning "flower village" in Japanese — is a concept boutique hotel and retreat located in Naoshima, Japan. The experience centers on a single, immersive offering: guests spend several nights learning to create a pair of Japanese selvedge denim from scratch, leaving with a fully handcrafted garment made entirely by their own hands.

The concept sits at the intersection of two distinct Japanese design philosophies — the utilitarian craft heritage of denim-making and the quiet refinement of Japanese luxury minimalism.

To celebrate each stage of the denim-making process, I designed a series of five brochures — each dedicated to a different phase: cotton, dyeing, weaving, designing, and finishing. In a deliberate nod to the material itself, the brochures were printed on fabric, replicating the texture and hand-feel of the denim the guest would be creating. Beyond the brochures, the brand extended across nine bespoke products — a sake bottle, shampoo and conditioner, bar soap, chopstick packs, a yuzu candle, a food and drink menu, a door sign, a hotel keycard, and an envelope — each designed to carry the same visual language: clean, minimal, and quietly ceremonial.

Every material choice, typographic decision, and product detail was made in service of one cohesive vision — a brand that feels as considered and unhurried as the craft it was built around.
